McLean Man convicted of involvement in tech support scam

A McLean man was sentenced on Friday, June 3, to three years in prison for his role in a fraudulent scheme to defraud more than 1,300 victims out of $1.6 million in a call center scam. According to court documents, 33-year-old Bruhaspaty Prasad conspired with several other people based in India at the call center to implement a technology assistance program aimed at senior citizens. The defendant’s co-conspirators contacted the victims through unsolicited phone calls and pop-up notifications on their computers, claiming, in part, that the victims needed help removing malware from their computers. In other cases, call center operators pretended to be dealing with companies like Amazon and Microsoft and falsely convinced victims that there was a problem with their online accounts. The victims were tricked into signing contracts for vocational assistance that never happened. Once victims agree to pay for a service, they are repeatedly contacted for more services and paid more.

Prasad, as the main plotter in the United States, is responsible for creating several companies that should provide technical support to customers. During the course of the conspiracy, Prasad opened three businesses in the Commonwealth of Virginia, all of which fraudulently profited from the scheme. Prasad is the only registered person in the bank account of the company he created. He was also responsible for transferring a large part of the fraud money to his associates in India. Prasad continued to operate these businesses and raised money for the victims even after receiving numerous complaints and negative reviews online. Instead of shutting down the business completely, Prasad continued to open the business to allow the fraudulent scheme to continue.

From April 2016 to September 2021, more than 1,300 people were defrauded. The victims had losses of more than $1.6 million.

Jessica D Aber, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Wayne A. Jacobs, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, made the announcement after U.S. District Judge Claude M. Hilton.

Amazon provided extensive assistance to law enforcement during the investigation, according to officials in the Eastern District of Virginia.8 Best BL/Yaoi Manga That Need Anime Adaptation
